Globalization and the Media
The media has become a central aspect in all our lives. We watch tv, listen to the radio, see films in the theater, go on the internet, all things that have introduced many new aspects not only to the world, but also globalization. In my expert paper, I discussed the media in relations to globalization. This topic was very intriguing and I learned many things from the research I conducted for my paper.
Since the Industrial Revolution the media has grown to take over many peoples lives. As people began to migrate into cities for jobs, leaving behind small towns, they began to become more and more obssessed with consumerism and media related products. This grew with time, till today, where most of us tend to wake up and go to bed without even noticing how much media affects us. And the great thing is, with new technology and globalization, not only are we being influenced by our own country, but also by the world.
In my paper, I touched on the idea that the media encompasses the political, economical and social aspects of globalization. The particular type of media that was mainly focused on was American Popular Culture, and its effect on the international audience, as well as America. When discussing the social sector, such things as culture was brought up, and concerns that were raised from the international community about the feeling of one universal culture because of media. This was the most interesting part in my opinion, especially because I do not necessarily believe that just because media is being shared across the ocean means that everyone will conform to these standards. Also, many countries were scared of losing their markets to the United STates film industries and therefore have tariffs and quotas to limit the amount that comes in. However, if these products are in demand, than one way or another these will most likely make it into the country, therefore the question arises if there is really a need for these. Yes, the countries are trying to protect their own economies and media market, but most likely they will still be successful with American products as well.
Overall, I find the media to be a very interesting topic to read about, especially when put into context with Globalization. I dont believe any of us really grasp the amount of influence that media has over the world, and how it is influential among so many different areas of our lives it does affect.
