Walmart in India
Walmart, along with Bharti Enterprise, is planning to open within the next 5 years, hundreds of Walmarts across the country. This new movement is created conflict between those who are welcoming the Western retailers, and those who are happy with the long standing tradition of private owned Indian companies. India is very interested to see how Walmart will take off in their country-so far, the company misjudged some of their targeted costumers, resulting in the withdrawel from South Korea and Germany. The Bharti Enterprise has also never worked with such a large coporation, so Walmart is very keen at the moment on their movement to India. Arvind Singhal, chairman of KSA Technopak, says ” Bharti and Walmart make a formitable combination. One is the worlds largest retailer and the other is amongst Indias most aggressive companies.” Some critics say that with the coming of Walmart, there will be a rise of jobless people and the polution will rise with more driving to the retail store. In general, the Indian retail industry is expected to raise from $300 billion to a year to $635 billion a year by 2015.
Walmart going to India, is not a totally new thing. They already have their hand in the in a sourcing operation, purchasing $ 1.6 billion worth of leather goods and textiles to sale around the world. However, there are still cultural complications that could arise and that Walmart should watch out for. But right now, Walmart sees India as the new place to go, and as long as there is buisness there, they are planning to stay.
Globalization and the Media
The media has become a central aspect in all our lives. We watch tv, listen to the radio, see films in the theater, go on the internet, all things that have introduced many new aspects not only to the world, but also globalization. In my expert paper, I discussed the media in relations to globalization. This topic was very intriguing and I learned many things from the research I conducted for my paper.
Since the Industrial Revolution the media has grown to take over many peoples lives. As people began to migrate into cities for jobs, leaving behind small towns, they began to become more and more obssessed with consumerism and media related products. This grew with time, till today, where most of us tend to wake up and go to bed without even noticing how much media affects us. And the great thing is, with new technology and globalization, not only are we being influenced by our own country, but also by the world.
In my paper, I touched on the idea that the media encompasses the political, economical and social aspects of globalization. The particular type of media that was mainly focused on was American Popular Culture, and its effect on the international audience, as well as America. When discussing the social sector, such things as culture was brought up, and concerns that were raised from the international community about the feeling of one universal culture because of media. This was the most interesting part in my opinion, especially because I do not necessarily believe that just because media is being shared across the ocean means that everyone will conform to these standards. Also, many countries were scared of losing their markets to the United STates film industries and therefore have tariffs and quotas to limit the amount that comes in. However, if these products are in demand, than one way or another these will most likely make it into the country, therefore the question arises if there is really a need for these. Yes, the countries are trying to protect their own economies and media market, but most likely they will still be successful with American products as well.
Overall, I find the media to be a very interesting topic to read about, especially when put into context with Globalization. I dont believe any of us really grasp the amount of influence that media has over the world, and how it is influential among so many different areas of our lives it does affect.
Untouchables
Untouchables were first introduced into my sphere of knowledge when reading the book The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman. Basically to become an untouchable one must not only posses the skills needed to get into a job field, but also have that extra something and be able to adapt to almost any type of change. By doing so, that person can make it through all the transformations that are constantly going on within the buisness and world arena.
4 articles were published on WSJ.com about different companies in the US-the Bobcat, Schantz Organ Co, Viking and different factories in Warsaw Indianna. All of these had many different things in common, the number one being that they were successful in their towns and productive to the point where there is no need for offshoring or outsourcing like many other companies have been choosing to do. The support they get from the community as well as the overall success of their products has allowed these companies to stay rooted in the towns they originated in.
Another reason all these have been successful is the fact that they have specialized workers and products. One can go to a giant chain store and get generic products, but these stores dont have the little special products that small stores may have. Also, the workers that are in the smaller, untouchable stores such as those mentioned in the article have probably had more training and possess more knowledge than the average store worker. Therefore, it is not only more convienent for the costumer, but also makes those buisnesses less likely to go out of buisness.
Being an untouchable in todays society is what everyone should aim to be. It will not only secure a job for the future, but also make one more on demand amongst society and the buisness world.
